FAQs

I've tried to answer your potential questions below, but if you want to ask me anything – please feel free to get in touch and contact me.

WHEN SHOULD I ORDER MY CAKE?

I only fulfil a limited number of cakes per month so I advise you book as early as possible to avoid disappointment. In general 4-12 months is a good time-frame. I can occasionally accommodate shorter time frames, where my diary allows, so do enquire even if you require a cake with less than 4 months notice.

WHERE WILL MY CAKE BE MADE?

Brambleolai is a home based business and all of my cakes are made in my home kitchen.

CAN I COME AND VISIT YOU?

As Brambleolai is a home based business, I prefer not to have clients visit my premises, but if you would like to meet in person we can arrange a face to face consultation somewhere convenient.

DO YOU HAVE A HYGIENE CERTIFICATE?

Yes. I am registered with the Runnymede Borough Council Environmental Health Department and hold a level 2 Food Safety & Hygiene Certificate, as required by the department. The department have awarded me a level 5 food hygiene rating (the highest level attainable).

DO YOU HAVE INSURANCE?

Yes – I have both public and product liability insurance.

DO YOUR CAKES CONTAIN ALLERGENS OR ADDITIVES?

Yes, all of my cakes contain allergens. I will discuss allergy information with you during consultation and I always include allergy information with all of my cakes on delivery. My cakes also contain some additives such as the raising agents within self raising flour, emulsifiers in chocolate, and preservatives in dried fruit. Some items used to decorate your cake are also additives, such as food colouring and edible glue. I believe in being open and honest about what I use to create my cakes so you can make informed decisions – if you have any questions at all, please do not hesitate to contact me.

DO YOU CATER FOR SPECIFIC ALLERGY REQUIREMENTS?

Unfortunately I cannot cater for any specific allergy requirements, so please talk to me during consultations if you have any concerns.

WHAT INFORMATION DO YOU NEED?

Before being able to confirm your order, I need to know the exact details of your event and desired cake – this means knowing everything from the date and time of your event, the venue, and delivery details, right through to the portions required, flavour, size and design of your cake. All of these details will be discussed and confirmed during consultations. Don't worry if you don't know everything at the start, still contact me and we will go from there.

HOW AND WHEN CAN I HAVE A CONSULTATION?

I encourage clients to start by emailing me so we can begin to discuss ideas for both the cake design and requirements. This also gives me time to get to know what makes you, 'you', and hopefully go on to create a design with your personality as the inspiration. Then, if a more in depth conversation is needed, or you just want to have the reassurance of a 'face to face' conversation, we can arrange a Skype video call at a time that suits you.

DO I HAVE TO PLACE AN ORDER ONCE I'VE HAD A CONSULTATION?

I offer consultations with absolutely no obligation to then place an order with me.

DO YOU OFFER CAKE TASTINGS?

Yes – see my Sample Boxes page for more information.

CAN I RESERVE MY DATE?

Your booking date (the date you require your cake) is reserved once I accept your order, and secured with a 50% payment. I cannot offer the option to reserve a date before placing an order.

DO YOU OFFER CUTTING CAKES?

Yes I do. And for those who are now thinking 'what is a cutting cake?' - a cutting cake is a simply iced cake, without decoration, used to provide additional portions. It tends not to be seen by guests, until cut and ready to serve. It allows you to order a smaller main cake, decorated as you wish, but still cater for all of your guests. I only offer cutting cakes in addition to a wedding or celebration cake order. For a cutting cake quote please contact me.

CAN I REQUEST A CAKE DESIGN WITH MY FAVOURITE TV CHARACTER, FOOTBALL TEAM, OR SINGER?

As a designer myself, I know how much work goes into creating designs and the value of branding etc.; therefore I respect other people's work and I will not create any cake that might potentially infringe someone's copyright – i.e. I won't create any designs using brands, names, logos, characters or artwork created by someone else.

I'VE FOUND A PHOTO OF A CAKE I LOVE, CAN YOU COPY IT?

Without trying to be too blunt...NO!! I respect other cake designers' work and know the value of their time, expertise, and design copyright – therefore I will not recreate a cake originally designed by someone other than myself. I can, however, use other cake designs to inspire a bespoke creation just for you, that puts your personality at the focus.

CAN I EAT MY CAKE DECORATIONS?

I include an 'Important Information' sheet with all of my cake orders, stating what items and decorations are inedible on your specific cake. Sugar or wafer paper flowers are often inedible due to strict regulations on food colouring amounts and because of structural materials included, such as wire and/or dowels, which are often hidden.

DO YOU OFFER FRESH FLOWER DECORATIONS?

I do not offer fresh flower decorations and strongly recommend you do not place fresh flowers on or very near to your cake. Fresh flowers can contain some nasty bugs, bacteria and chemicals – all of which pose a food hygiene risk. For the same reason I advise against adding any additional decorations to your cake after delivery/collection. If you would like a floral design for your cake then sugar or wafer paper flowers are the best way to go – talk to me about your ideas.

CAN I JUST ORDER A CAKE DECORATION WITHOUT A CAKE, OR PROVIDE A CAKE FOR YOU TO DECORATE?

Quality, worth, and professionalism, are core values for the Brambleolai brand, and I am passionate about creating cakes that both look and taste amazing. As I can't ensure both the suitability and appearance of a cake I haven't made myself I don't offer cake decorations without a cake or the option of decorating a cake supplied by you.

DO YOU OFFER PLAIN CAKES THAT I CAN DECORATE MYSELF?

I do not offer undecorated cakes other than cutting cakes – which are only available in addition to a decorated wedding or celebration cake order.

CAN YOU MATCH ICINGS, DECORATIONS, AND RIBBONS To MY COLOUR SCHEME?

As with any handmade and bespoke creation, there is an element of variation that makes exact colour matching very difficult. I mix all of my food colours by hand, and only use carefully selected, food safe, ribbons and decorations from trustworthy suppliers. If you would like me to try to create or source icings, decorations or ribbons in a close or similar colour to your scheme, then you can supply me with a colour swatch or swatches (as agreed during consultation) – however, I cannot guarantee being able to exactly match any of my icings, decorations or ribbons to your swatch.

DO YOU OFFER DELIVERY OR COLLECTION?

I offer delivery. See my Delivery Page for more details and please contact me if you would like more information.

DO YOU HIRE OUT ANY CAKE STANDS, TABLES, OR KNIVES?

No, I don't hire out, sell or supply any cake stands, tables or knives.

WILL YOU ACCEPT AN ORDER FROM SOMEONE UNDER 18 YEARS OF AGE?

If you are under 18 and would like to order something from me, please ask a responsible adult to help you. I won't knowingly enter into any transaction and/or contract with anyone under 18 years of age.

I LIVE ABROAD - CAN I ORDER ONE OF YOUR CAKES?

Brambleolai is currently for Mainland UK customers only.

CAN I READ YOUR TERMS & CONDITIONS BEFORE ORDERING?

Of course! If you would like to read my T&Cs at any point (even before having a consultation) just contact me and I'll be happy to send you a copy.
