A RELAXED AND FINE ART WEDDING PHOTOGRAPHER
Welcome to my Friday Feature – where, once a month, I showcase a business I think you might find inspiring for your wedding or celebration plans.* I know it's not always easy to find suppliers who are modern and artistic, and able to celebrate what makes you 'you', without compromising on style or quality – I hope you find these features helpful.
November's Friday Feature is the very talented, and lovely, Amanda from Amanda Karen Photography. A London wedding photographer, based in the UK, but also covering the rest of the world – Amanda and her husband, Hutch, don't just take gorgeous images they focus on capturing the emotion in each moment and the story of your day. I asked Amanda a few questions about her and Amanda Karen Photography so you can find out more.
Why do you do what you do?
“We are a husband and wife team that specialise in relaxed wedding photography with a touch of fine art romance. For us, it’s all about storytelling, from the engagement shoot through to our couples tearing up the dance floor with their guests. We love capturing those moments they might miss, the emotion of the day and the beautiful detail that they have spent months planning and putting together for their perfect day.
I (Amanda) am a true romantic and I always shed a tear when my couples meet at the bottom of the aisle, I think it’s my favourite moment! There is the nervous energy at the build-up, and then when they meet at the bottom of the aisle there are beaming smiles.
Whilst I capture the portraits and group shots, Hutch is like a camera ninja and is capturing the guests mingling and enjoying the reception, all those natural candid moments of laughter, canapés and general merriment. It’s why working as a team is so great, we can capture so much of the day for our couples, so they can experience the day over and over again, even the moments they weren’t there for! ”
Which clients do you love to work with?
“We have been so lucky with all our couples, they are all super chilled, love photography (they value it which is important to us) and their wedding is about them as a couple and celebrating it with their nearest and dearest. Most of our couples opt for a wedding album, there is something so special about seeing your wedding photos printed and beautifully bound, it’s so much more exciting to flick through those pages than to flick through them on a screen!
Our couples have a great sense of style, but just as important is spending time with their guests and experiencing their day with them, usually with some killer canapés – food tends to be really important to our couples – real foodies! ”
What has been your favourite project to date?
“Not so much a project, but anything destination wedding or shoot related so far has been amazing, we’ve had the opportunity to shoot weddings in Italy and Paris, to collaborate with amazing suppliers in Paris and capture brand portraits in Menorca! We are both huge travel junkies, so being able to combine that with our passion for photography, it’s a dream combination.
That’s not to say though that we haven’t had amazing UK weddings and shoots too, the UK has so much to offer, we’ve been in castles, vineyards, rural oases and amongst iconic London landmarks! That’s the beauty of photography, we can literally work anywhere and it’s the variety that makes it so fun and rewarding. We are constantly getting to visit new places and meet amazing people!”
What would be your dream project?
“We have quite a bucket list! There are real specifics like particular venues (orangeries are a huge favourite right now), through to more generally like, New York, Italy (again – we absolutely love it there), a beach wedding, etc. Basically, we want to continue working with great couples, with weddings that reflect them, but also keeping that variety we love.”
What does your average working week look like?
“Hmm, every week is different, at least from the shooting side (which is what we love), we could be travelling for weddings or creating brand images for businesses new or old. But actually, the physical photography side of the business is a small part of the work involved in being a photographer. For one, each shoot results in many hours of editing, for weddings it could be 30 hours of editing – each image is carefully selected and edited between us to bring together the overall story.
The admin side if pretty evenly split between us – IT and finance related tasks fall to Hutch and the marketing and day to day client contact is undertaken by me. Another great reason for being a team! So many people have said it must be hard working as a married couple, but we really do complement each other, our skills mesh well and it’s also great fun working together. Although on wedding days we don’t actually get to see that much of each other, we’re too busy capturing our respective areas of the day to get the best possible coverage for our couples. We do have his and hers desks though – the furniture matches but the accessories are very representative of each of us (and mine is generally tidier!)”
What is the one most important piece of advice you always give a bride?
“Your wedding is about you both as a couple, so make sure the wedding represents you both. You can do what you like for your wedding, don’t feel pressured to do things because you feel that’s what you have to do, or because someone else says that’s what you should do. That’s the beauty of weddings today, there is so much choice on offer for couples (which can be overwhelming, so take your time and enlist a planner if needed, they can honestly be like wedding fairy godmothers or godfathers) so really can have whatever you want, from the type of venue to the entertainment or the food you serve.”
What do you like to do in your spare time?
“Like our couples, those closest to us are important, so it’s spending time with friends and family, and also taking time to be with each other in a non-work capacity. We love exploring London and finding great new spots and trying new restaurants, and of course travelling when we can.
We’ve also been doing up our house (it’s so nearly finished) and are so looking forward to lots of BBQs in the garden next year with a chilled glass of wine.
I have to say though, even in our spare time the camera is usually with us, we can’t resist taking photos wherever we go – it’s a passion, maybe even an addiction!”
Amanda's passion for gorgeous, relaxed, fine art wedding photography is clear to see – and she and husband Hutch seem like a great team. If you are looking for relaxed wedding photography, with a focus on emotion and storytelling, then definitely take a look at Amanda Karen Photography.
*Please note: I have not been paid by any business for promotion in a Friday Feature – I choose to feature their work because I feel their brand fits with Brambleolai's clients. I have not necessarily worked with the businesses personally and you should always thoroughly research suppliers to make sure they are the right fit for you. These posts are designed to inspire, inform, and introduce – not sell.
